Dance around the midsummer pole
The most common celebration of midsummer is tied to dancing around the midsummer pole, also called may pole. The midsummer pole is a leafy and flower-decorated pole in the shape of a cross with wreaths hanging from the crossbar.
We form rings and dance around the pole, while we sing traditional nursery rhymes such as Little Frogs. The midsummer pole probably came to us from Germany in the 14th century. During the midsummer celebration, there are also games such as sack races and other fun activities.
Having a wreath of flowers in your hair is common during midsummer, mainly among children and women. You can tie them with birch bark or steel wire as a base and then add flowers and leaves.
In Uddevalla, midsummer is celebrated in the traditional way at the following places:
The museum park
Bring the whole family or group of friends and dress up the midsummer pole. Subsequent dance and music with Uddevalla Folkdansgille! The midsummer pole begins to be dressed at 12:00 and we raise it at about 1:00 p.m. Then there will be dancing and singing ending at 2:00 p.m. Organized by Bohusläns Museeum in company with Uddevalla Folkkdansgille.
Gustafberg
Traditional midsummer celebrations for the public begin at 4:00 pm with dancing around the maypole.
Unda kamping & Resort
The Midsummer pole is dressed from 12.00 and at 15.00 the musicians start up and the dancing starts. Games, as well as guided walks around the area will also be set up.
Anfasteröd Gårdsvik
Traditional midsummer celebration with dancing and singing around the midsummer pole from 11.30 onwards.
Hafsten Resort & Camping
Start at 14:00 with entertainment at the midsummer pole on the grass beach with Mattson, Thorell and company. Dancing around the midsummer pole starts at 15:00, when the dance is finished all the children are offered a drink.
Bokenäset
Come and celebrate this summer at Bokenäs Gamla Prästgård with music and midsummer dance around the unique Bräckestång, which we raise in our beautiful garden. There is plenty of room for both dancing and a break in the green grass. There is a fishing pond for all children. We started at 18:00 and finish at 19:30. ATTENTION! Bring your own coffee.
Fossen camping
At 11:00 we dress the pole together at the playground. At 12:30 we have a picnic at the playground NOTE! Bring your own coffee / picnic. At 13:00 it's finally time for our traditional dance around the midsummer pole again. Aaron Hansson will handle the music and we will help with the dancing.
