Herring museum

The museum showcases the history of Klädesholmen, with a focus on herring The Herring Museum illustrates the development and significance of the herring industry for Klädesholmen and the longline fishing conducted in Shetland.

Visitors can see how fishing boats brought ling from Shetland and how it was prepared before becoming lutefisk.

The museum also depicts how herring boats from Klädesholmen visited almost all Swedish ports to sell various fish and herring products. This trade from the boats was succeeded by the canning industry on Klädesholmen, which produces 40% of all Swedish herring cans.

Guided Tours and Herring Tastings


Guided tours of the museum can be booked in advance (min 10 people) and are also available in English. Contact person Nils Gunnar Johansson nils.gunnar48@telia.com, or phone 070-2754647

Herring tasting is offered. Each session can accommodate about 40 people. Guests are treated to four types of herring with sour cream and onion, along with bread and drinks. The tasting begins with a brief presentation on the history of herring. In the adjacent grocery store, visitors can also purchase pickled herring and other products from Klädesholmen Seafood.

Herring tasting must be pre-booked and can also be conducted in English.
