Von Essen's Beech Forest

In Ekedalen Nature Reserve, you can enjoy the beautiful beech forest that primarily makes up the reserve. You can also take a walk along the Ödegårdsstigen trail, which runs through the reserve.

The von Essen Beech Forest

Ekedalen Nature Reserve consists mainly of deciduous forest. The older trees were planted with saplings from Germany during the 1870s by Baron Reinhold von Essen. The forest is primarily composed of beech, hornbeam, gray poplar, sycamore maple, and silver fir. Several of the trees can be considered giant trees, including eight giant beech trees in the reserve.

Thriving Deciduous Forest Species

Since dead trees are not removed in the reserve, beetles and fungi have found a perfect habitat here. Over 241 different fungal species have been recorded. Birds also thrive in the reserve. Here, you can spot typical deciduous forest species such as wood pigeons, lesser spotted woodpeckers, nutcrackers, green warblers, and great tits.

Ödegårdsstigen Trail

The beautiful hiking trail Ödegårdsstigen runs through the reserve.
