Lokstallet – The art center of Strömstad
Lokstallet presents a diverse range of exhibitions featuring contemporary artists working on the national, international, and local art scene. The venue is open during the summer and offers a unique environment where art and culture are given space to unfold on their own terms. Our ambition is to collaborate with invited artists to produce thought-provoking and visually striking exhibitions that spark curiosity and reflection in our visitors.
At Lokstallet, the definition of contemporary art is broadly interpreted and may include the visual arts, architecture, crafts, performance, design, socially engaged projects, and much more.
The building itself is a renovated locomotive shed, with many of its original architectural elements preserved from its time as a train cart repairshop. The original roof beams remain, but the interior has been beautifully restored with white plastered walls and a wooden floor now covers 200 square meters. Large windows allow natural light to enter, giving the space a cathedral-like atmosphere. Just the building alone is worth a visit.
The venue is wheelchair accessible and an adapted restroom is available. There are ample parking spaces nearby and it is just a 5-minute walk from the train station.
Lokstallet is operated by Strömstad Municipality with additional funding from the Västra Götaland Region.
