A courthouse with a long history
With its court, inn and county sheriff’s office, Binneberg was once an important centre for this part of Vadsbo. The current courthouse was built in the 1750s as a single-storey stone building. The second floor, made of wood, was added in the 1810s. Binneberg had a court until 1891.
The gallows hill
A momentous event took place here in 1710, when the notorious enforcement officer Johan Warenberg was beaten to death. Eight people were sentenced to death. According to tradition, three of them were executed on the town’s gallows hill. The old courthouse at Binneberg was subsequently used as a school, among other things. It was restored in 1950, and the old courtroom was reinstated. Since 1978, the courthouse has been designated a state historic building.
