Fornbyn - Historical village
Skara

Experience life in the 19th century

An old barn, a church, a blacksmith's forge and many other cottages are gathered in the historical village for you to discover what life was like in the 19th century in the area of Västergötland.

Next door to the Västergötland Museum is Fornbyn Historical Village, Skara’s own little open air museum, featuring houses moved from all Västergötland, to give an impression of the farming community of old.

Fornbyn puts on display residential cottages, a blacksmith’s forge, an old country shop, and an open air dance pavilion. Fornbyn is also a great recreational area for both adults and children, with picnic area and barbecue facilities.

Around the cottages are groves of old-fashioned flowers, fruits, spices and vegetables. In the barn from Kokkola is a permanent exhibition about architecture called “Advice to preserve.”

If you are in Skara at Midsummer, do not miss the traditional Midsummer celebrations in Fornbyn.

During the summer it is  steeming with life in Fornbyn with many public events and programmes, such as dancing around the maypole on Midsummer’s Eve, a vintage car show, and a folk music festival. In autumn, Skara’s seven-year-olds get to experience life in the 19th century in the Händene cottage.
