Ramlaklevrundan walking trail
Varnhem

Varied walking trail with breathtaking views and rich culture

The Ramlaklev Trail takes you through a varied landscape, with breathtaking views, enchanting forest and rolling greenery. You’ll pass forest lakes and hike through Varnhem, with its impressive monastery church.

Sights along the way

Ramlaklev

From Ramlaklev, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Kinnekulle, Lake Hornborga, and the Valle area. Here, you stand on a diabase edge, a magmatic rock formed 300 million years ago.

Höjentorp-Drottningkullen nature reserve

In this large nature reserve, you’ll walk past forest lakes and cherry trees. A short detour from the trail leads you to Höjentorp Castle Ruins, where you can see the remains of the castle once built by Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie near the small lake Trädgårdssjön.

Varnhem monastery church & Kata gård

Around 1150, the construction of the monastery church in Varnhem began. The church is the burial site of Birger jarl, the founder of Stockholm, and several Swedish kings. Nearby, you can explore the monastery ruins and learn about monastic life, as well as experience the recreated Klostersjön. Don’t miss a visit to Kata Farm, where you can see the ruins of one of Sweden’s oldest churches and an exhibition on Christian Vikings.

Ljungstorpsrundan

For a shorter hike, choose the Ljungstorp Trail (ca 4,5 km). Follow the Ramlaklev Trail markers past the Ramlaklev lookout point and through the forest until you reach the asphalt road. Turn left and follow the country road, passing small farms, before reaching the gravel road leading back to Ljungstorp's local heritage center. Please note that the trail isn’t marked along the country road.
