Styrsö – Island idyll with a sustainable focus
It doesn’t take more than 30 minutes to get from the centre of Gothenburg to the picturesque island of Styrsö. You can easily get to this car free island on public transport. Enjoy charming streets, salty swims and lovely fikas.

Car free roads and beautiful views
It’s not an exaggeration to describe the chain of islands along Gothenburg’s coast as absolutely idyllic. Each one seems more charming than the last, and most of them are now completely car free. Styrsö is no exception, so if you feel like you’ve done enough walking for the day then your choice of transport is between bikes and mopeds.
The island is full of charming alleyways and lanes between the houses and fishing huts, but to see it from its best side you should get your walking shoes on and climb Stora Rös, which is the island’s highest point. You’ll get a magnificent view of the whole archipelago from up there.
Two places you don’t want to miss on Styrsö!
1. Brännholm Bay
Brännholmsvik is a beautiful bay on Styrsö’s south coast. It’s calm and peaceful here, far from any settlements, so you can relax and enjoy yourselves. Perfect for a picnic with some fresh shellfish bought locally!
2. The boules court at Öbergska
Café Öbergska has more to offer than just nice coffee and cakes. You can also play a few rounds of boules in the leafy garden, while you listen to live music from the cafe’s stage. Check out their Facebook page to see when the next performance is.
Nearby attractions
Café Öbergska on Styrsö has among other things its own herb garden and boules court. This little cafe serves both meals and snacks so it’s perfect for either lunch or fika. Its run by a heritage association and as well as the cafe and herb garden, there’s a little gallery with shop where you can get unique locally made home decor.
If you keep walking west you’ll eventually come to Styrsö’s other ferry terminal, Tången. There’s a scenic walk from here down to Sandvik and Uttervik, two small bays which make up one bigger one. On very sunny days the water temperature can be extra warm as the bay is sheltered from the currents further out to sea.

There’s a whole lot to discover in Gothenburg. And there’s even more to explore outside the city. All you have to do is ride just a few stops beyond the city limits to enjoy some really memorable experiences.
