Mariestad's Cathedral
Mariestad

A grand cathedral in the city center

Mariestad's cathedral is magnificent and powerful where it sits on a hill in the middle of the town.

Mariestad was founded in 1583 by Gustav Vasa's son Duke Karl (later, king Karl IX). Ten years later, year 1593, the work of building the cathedral began. There were religious strife between Duke Karl and his brother Johan, and the cathedral can be viewed as a symbol for the protestant reformation and the battle between catholicism and protestantism which raged in the late 1500's.

The cathedral was finished 1619. Its current looks came from a renovation in 1905. With its 82 meter tall tower, it takes tenth place among Swedish churches.

Four times a day, you'll hear music from the church bells, thanks to the organ player Anders Börjesson.
