Leksberg church
Mariestad

Medieval ancestry right outside of the city center

Right outside Mariestad's urban area sits Leksberg church, which likely was built already during the 1200's, with late baroque character, mainly through its decorative ceiling art by the Mariestad painter Olof Collander (1682-1760) and his student Johan Liedholm.

Leksberg church was likely built in the 13th century and somewhat lenghtened toward the east during the end of the century. The western part of the church is medieval, and the chancel was rebuilt and enlarged in the early 1700's. The tower was built in the 1600's.

In the interior, there's an altarpiece from 1679, and on the southern wall there's an oil painting depicting "Christ in the herb garden", painted by J.Z. Blackstadius (1816-1898).

Leksberg church has enough room for 140 people.
