Karsmossen's nature reserve
Gullspång/Mariestad

An exciting wilderness

Karsmossen is a large forest- and mire area. Most part of it is made out of bogs and marshes of different types.

The western parts of the reserve is made up of almost 200 hectare coniferous forest with wet swamp forests. The old coniferous forest and the mire makes an exciting wilderness with a rich birdlife. The mire has a fair amount of islets, and the terrain in the woods is partially blocky and hilly.

The forest has practically only been plucked, and therefore it is relatively unaffected by modern forestry. Much is over 170 years old, and multiple mire islets are completely untouched with over 200 year old pines. Dead wood of pine, fir and birch is richly available for the animals, and in many different stages of decomposition. The area is somewhat difficult to reach for humans, but a paradise for woodpeckers, capercailles, lichen, and many other species.

You're welcome to visit the reserve Karmossen, but do consider that it's not allowed to:

  • Use any motor vehicles except on the C-road
  • Plant any species of flora or fauna
  • Arrange competitions and camping for more than 100 people

These rules do not apply to when the steward, or the steward's representative, perform actions for the reserve's care and wellbeing. Rule 1 does not apply to permitted hunters by transport of kills. It also does not apply in case of work at the road.
