Church next to beautiful mansion

Right next to one of Västra Götaland's most remarkable manors, Stora Ek, we find Ek church, built in the 1790s but with a medieval predecessor.

The old church was a simple hall building with a timbered nave in the south and a timbered sacristy in the east, it also had an uncovered belfry. The old church is believed to have originated in the late 14th century.

From the old church, a baptismal font from the 13th century has been preserved, two renovated sculptures depicting Matthew and John, as well as a framed depiction of the resurrection that has been part of the old church's altarpiece.

On the outer wall of the chancel are tombstones that were probably floors in the old church.

The current church was built between the years 1795-98 by building the nave, tower, sacristy and the three-sided choir.

When you visit the church, you should notice the pulpit, which is unusual in both color and shape, it is also adorned with an hourglass from the 18th century.
