In Hjo, families can discover a variety of activities to enjoy together. Take advantage of some of our tips on activities that both young and old can do during the summer months in Hjo.
Children's quiz walk
Take the family on an exciting quiz walk through Hjo's charming alleys and cobble stone lanes. With a cute backpack containing a quiz coupon, pen and a measuring stick, you can explore the old town and learn about its history in a playful way. A perfect activity to stimulate the curiosity of young adventurers!
The nature reserve along the river Hjoån
Discover the beautiful and wild nature along the river Hjoån. This is a nature reserve right in the town centre that stretches all the way from the harbour and 4 kilometres west towards the small lake Mullsjön. The nature trail offers a peaceful hike along the water, where children can learn about local flora and fauna. Pack a picnic and enjoy a day filled with fresh air and forest adventures. Just follow the wooden signs saying ”naturstig”.
Action Park
For the more adventurous families, there's Hjo's action park. Here, you'll find both bowl and street areas with flowing elements where you can skate, skateboard, or ride scooters together. Adjacent to the park is a sandy area where the whole family can play beach handball and beach volleyball or kick around a soccer ball.
Playgrounds in the City Center
At the playgrounds in the town park and by the harbour, along the river Hjoån, children can swing and test their limits on various obstacle courses. It's a fun and challenging place where children can expend their energy and build confidence in a safe environment.
Guldkroksbadet – an outdoor pool area
Enjoy the sun at the outdoor pool area Guldkroksbadet. With a splash pool, full-size swimming pool, playground, and beach area by lake Vättern, this is the perfect place for a day filled with play and laughter. A relaxed atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for the whole family. Additionally, admission is free for both adults and children.
A digital Tour with the cat Cattus
During the digital tour with Cattus, you'll get to know the cat who knows a lot! He'll share all his knowledge and wise words, and he'll surely answer questions you might be wondering about. "What was a spa really like?" "What kind of monks are we talking about?" "How did Hjo come about?" and "What did they actually do in a customs house?" Yes, Cattus will tell you all about this and much more during this digital tour. The Cattus tour is available for download in our app "TreTrästäder," free via the Google Play Store or AppStore.
Sightseeing train Lok-Hjo-Motivet
Hop aboard the small city train Lok-Hjo-Motivet and embark on an exciting sightseeing tour through the Hjo. This charming little train takes you on a journey through Hjo's historic sites and attractions, with stories that engage both young and old. Tours start in the harbor area, outside the guest harbor office.
Adventure Golf
Challenge each other to a round of adventure golf on the beautifully designed course at Hjo Camping. With obstacles and challenges for both young and old players, it's fun competition for the whole family. Laughter and joy are guaranteed!
Ice Cream Treat
End the day with a delicious ice cream treat. Hjo offers two cozy ice cream cafes, Moster Elins in Hjo harbor and Gula Paviljongen (the yellow pavilion) by the river Hjoån, where you can enjoy plenty of ice cream. It's the perfect ending to a day filled with activities.
Pottery at Clay
Give children the opportunity to explore their creative side by trying pottery at Clay. The studio near Hjo Town Park offer workshops where children can create their own artwork and souvenirs from their visit to Hjo.
Outdoor Chess in the historical park
Take the opportunity to challenge the family to a game of chess. The terrace outside of Hotel Bellevue has an outdoor chess set with oversized chess pieces available for free.
Mini Golf
Play mini golf on the 18-hole course in the beautiful surroundings of Hjo Town Park. Participate in a sport where everyone can join, big or small, a perfect family activity during the summer months.
Bison Safari
Why not join a bison safari at the Bison Farm in Gate? It's an exciting adventure for both young and old, getting up close and personal with these magnificent animals. So come along and get to know Bamse and his friends at Sweden's largest Bison Farm in Gate, just south of Hjo City.
Crafting at Kulturkvarteret
At the culture centre Kulturkvarteret, you can borrow craft boxes with various contents. Spend an afternoon or a morning beading, painting, making postcards, or doing other fun activities together. The boxes are free to borrow.
