Alphems Arboretum
Floby/Falköping
Outside Floby is one of Sweden’s largest tree collections – Alphems Arboretum. Designed and built by country postman Frans Johan Gegerfeldt, it has become a highly popular garden destination.
Country postman Frans Johan Gegerfeldt
Some 10 kilometres west of the centre of Falköping is the town of Floby. Here you will find Alphems Arboretum – a verdant oasis created by country postman Frans Johan Gegerfeldt over 100 years ago.
Set among the trees is the postman’s own little cottage. Built by Frans Johan in 1903, he initially planted a couple of American fir trees beside the cottage. Over the next 50 years he worked on his garden, planting trees from all over the world. The park has more than 200 different trees and bushes and is one of Sweden’s largest tree collections created by one person.
Here there are also hills and excavated valleys on the bare heath where ‘The Dead River’ is just one of the many rock formations that he created.
Coffee shop
In the middle of the lush Alphems Arboretum there is a coffee shop where you can savour a range of appetising homemade cakes, buns, and sandwiches. You can eat outdoors and inside the coffee shop a delicious refreshment buffet is available. During the summer there are quiz walks, draws, talks, and musical entertainment.
