We have put together six suggested day tours for those who want to explore the art and culture of Dalsland. Tour nr. 4 takes you to through Åmål, Fengersfors and Edsleskog.

 

From saints to millstones

Åmål is a city with a long and eventful history. Dalsland’s only city has a wealth of culture and heritage. You can enjoy first-class blues and book festivals, or learn about the region’s industrial and railway history. European archaeologists are turning their attention to Edsleskog and the finds from the huge 13th-century brick church. Fengersfors Bruk cultural centre promises beautiful exhibition halls and fascinating cultural encounters, while in Fröskog you will find one of Dalsland’s fine baroque churches.

Åmål art gallery

 Åmål
The art gallery in Åmål is located in Kulturhuset in the city centre and shows temporary exhibitions in fine premises.

Nordiska litteraturhuset

 Åmål
Nordiska litteraturhuset is the heart of literary life in Dalsland. This is the home of Dalsland literary association and the book festival Bokdagar i Dalsland, as well as second-hand book sales.

Åmåls Hembygdsmuseum

 Åmål
The local heritage museum housed in a fine 18th century warehouse near the shore of Lake Vänern. Reconstructed settings from the early 20th century.

Åmåls Järnvägsmuseum

 Åmål
Located near the station and houses steam locomotives and other railway vehicles. A first-class railway car dating from 1940 and a dining car from 1938 are among the treasures.

Åmåls industrimuseum

 Åmål
Åmåls industrimuseum in C W Thorstenson’s mechanical workshop, has a collection of old mechanical engineering machines that are belt-driven, as in the 1920s.

Tollebols kvarn

 Åmål
Tollebols kvarn is a restored watermill with millpond, water chute and waterwheel, two kilometres west of Åmål. In summer the café is open and the museum shows what life was like here in days gone by. Activites for children and various farm animals.

Forsbacka

 Åmål
Forsbacka is a manor dating back to the start of the iron-working era in the 17th century and is now a golf club, hotel and restaurant.

Church of Edsleskog

 Edsleskog
During an excavation in Edsleskog a brick church was found. It turned out to be the largest building in Sweden dating from the early 13th century, or even earlier. This was the parish of Sankt Nils
of Edsleskog, who was made Sweden’s first saint in 1220.

Fengersfors bruk

 Fengersfors
The beautiful red brick mill buildings at Fengersfors Bruk are one of the most popular places to visit in Dalsland. The Not Quite association arranges exhibitions and events. There is also a café, bakery and well-preserved machinery from the industrial era.

Fröskog kyrka

 Fengersfors, Fröskog
Fröskog kyrka was built in 1730 and is clad with wood shingles, many of which are original. This well-preserved baroque church is beautiful both outside and inside.

Fröbacken cut flower garden

 Fengersfors, Fröskog
Fröbacken cut flower garden is located right next to Fröskogs Kyrka. In the summers you can have stroll around the garden and pick your own bouquet.
