5 Facts About Marine Litter

  • Five bathtubs full of trash—that’s how much waste washes up on Bohuslän’s coast every hour.
  • Around 80% of ocean litter originates from land.
  • It takes 200–500 years for an aluminum can to decompose naturally. For a glass jar, it takes a million years.
  • 94% of all plastic in the ocean is invisible—it sinks to the seabed over time.
  • Plastic in nature breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, eventually becoming microplastics. No one knows exactly how long plastic remains in nature—but it takes an extremely long time.

Everything that ends up in the ocean and doesn’t belong there is called marine litter. It may have been dumped directly into the sea or carried there by rainwater and rivers.

Sustainable Outdoor life in the archipelago

The Swedish Right of Public Access and its principles

Thanks to the Right of Public Access we can spend time outdoors in Sweden more or less anywhere we want. It’s a unique right, but it also means that we have to respect certain principles. The main one is “Do not disturb – do not destroy.”

Keep Bohuslän Tidy is a collaboration between Västkuststiftelsen, Keep Sweden Tidy, the West Sweden Tourist Board, and the municipalities of Bohuslän through A United Bohuslän. The purpose of this collaboration is to create better conditions for a cleaner and more sustainable Bohuslän—whether in the forests, cities, along the coast, or in the archipelago.
