Hiking on Sydkoster
Strömstad
On Sydkoster, the larger of the Koster Islands, you’ll hike through lush landscapes with deciduous forests, flower-rich meadows, and long sandy beaches perfect for swimming. Surrounding you is Sweden’s most biodiverse sea area, the Kosterhavet National Park.

Explore Sydkoster’s Diverse Landscape
Just outside Strömstad, you’ll find the scenic Koster Islands. The two main islands, Nordkoster and Sydkoster, are perfect for exploring on foot along trails and marked routes. Sydkoster is the larger of the two islands and features a varied landscape with open pastures, beach meadows, forests, and rocky outcrops.

Choose from three color-coded trails, each ranging from 2.5 to 13 kilometers. The longest blue trail takes you on a longer hike around the entire island, passing both the inland areas between the island's harbors and along much of the coastline. Stop at the Valfjäll viewpoint, swim at the long sandy beach at Kilesand, or explore the underwater life at the Rörvik snorkel trail.

During your hike, you'll discover many sights, stunning nature, and find your own hidden resting spots. There’s plenty for holidaymakers to enjoy here, from peaceful surroundings and beaches to local seafood and great accommodations.
Kostergården is one of the larger hotels, offering modern and comfortable lodging in a peaceful environment with a restaurant, two outdoor terraces, and a lobby bar.
Be sure to start your hike with a visit to Naturum Kosterhavet on Sydkoster. In addition to interesting information about the archipelago, you'll also find touch aquariums, exhibits, and a slide show.

Længde:
There are three color-coded hiking trails on Sydkoster: the blue trail (13.1 km), yellow trail (4.8 km), and brown trail (2.5 km).
Tidsforbrug:
It takes about four hours to walk around the island on the blue trail. However, the time needed will vary depending on how many breaks you take.
Mærkning:
The trails are marked with oak posts with color-coded markers for each trail and arrows at intersections. You can find an overview of the routes and tips on local sights on naturkartan.se. Paper maps are available at the Tourist Info in Strömstad, on Kosterbåtarna ferries, at the Koster docks, and at and around Naturum Kosterhavet.

Sværhedsgrad:
The trails are classified as moderate and mostly follow natural paths through varied terrain, including open pastures, mixed forests, and rocky outcrops. Some sections are on gravel or asphalt roads. If you want an easier hike, the white trail is a good option, with few elevation changes and relatively even terrain.
Start og slut:
There are several starting points on Sydkoster, depending on which trail you wish to hike. Ferries depart to the stops below all year round.
Ekenäs: The blue and brown trails start here, and Naturum Kosterhavet is a great starting point for your hike.
Långegärde: You can start the blue trail here.
Kilesand: The yellow trail starts here – you can also connect to the blue trail.
If you want to continue your hike on Nordkoster, there’s a cable ferry between the islands during the summer.

Find vej:
The Koster Islands are located just outside Strömstad and are served by ferries year-round. You can easily reach Strömstad in under 2 hours by car from Gothenburg or Oslo. Alternatively, the train from Gothenburg takes about 2.5 hours. The ferry departs from Strömstad's Northern Harbor and takes between 30 and 60 minutes. To hike on Sydkoster, disembark at Ekenäs, Långegärde, or Kilesand, depending on which trail you want to take. In summer, parking in central Strömstad can be difficult, so long-term parking options in Hålkedalen, Strömstad Gymnasium, and Bojaren, near the town entrances, are good alternatives. Free shuttle buses run from the parking areas to the town center during summer.
